The description of Israel’s encounter with Yahweh at Mt. Sinai has interesting parallels with the tabernacle Moses was instructed to build while there. The mountain of God was the place where God met with Israel and made a covenant with them. When the time came for them to leave the mountain they had completed construction of the tabernacle and God’s glory cloud, which had been above Mt. Sinai, moved to the tabernacle. Because of this, as well as several other details, it seems clear that the tabernacle was to be understood as a portable Mt. Sinai. It would serve the purpose of making God’s dwelling among the people possible for the entire time that they were wandering through the wilderness and up to the time that they were established in the land and the permanent temple structure was built.
